A Call To Prayer
NOW MORE THAN EVER WE MUST HEED THE CALL OF GOD TO PRAYER
"If My people, who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven, and forgive their sins and heal their land."
(2 Chronicles 7:14)
The "Call to Prayer" is a call for God's people to take responsibility, not just for ourselves, not just for our "church" or the Body of Christ at large, but for our cities, states, nation and the world.
Now, more than ever we must heed the call of God to pray. But before we can be truly effective in our praying, there are prerequisites- essential things we must understand before we can be effective.
Prerequisite #1: Know Who God Is
"God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?" (Numbers 23:19)
Jehovah God is the one true and living God. There is no other God above Him. He is the God of integrity. To say it a better way: He is Integrity! He never changes His Word. What He has promised, He will do; His Word is forever settled. We can bank on it.
He is the unchanging God. God, Himself, declares, "I am the Lord, I do not change" (Malachi 3:6).
He reaffirms this in the New Covenant through His Son in Hebrews 13:8 when the Holy Spirit says, "Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever." He is the unchanging God!
He answers prayers. He has a track record of answering prayers. In Jeremiah 33:3 (Amplified), God encourages His people to pray. He says, "Call unto Me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things, fenced in and hidden, which you do not know (do not distinguish and recognize have knowledge of and understand)." Then in John 16:23 (Amplified), Jesus tells us that "whatever we ask the Father in His [Jesus'] Name, He [the Father] will give it to us."
There is so much more about who God is that we could talk about, but that would take a whole book. However, for the subject of prayer these scriptures give insight into the God and Father whom we serve and helps to build our confidence to believe that when we pray, He is willing and ready to hear and grant us our requests, if we pray according to His will. We must keep in mind that His Word is His will. The Holy Spirit settles the issue of God's integrity, love, goodness, faithfulness, and mercy when He says:
"And this is the confidence (the assurance, the privilege of boldness) which we have in Him:[we are sure] that if we ask anything (make any request) according to His will (in agreement with His own plan), He listens to and hears us.
"And if (since) we [positively] know that He listens to us in whatever we ask, we also know [with settled and absolute knowledge] that we have [granted us as our present possessions] the requests made of Him."
(1 John 5:13-14 Amplified)
Prerequisite #2: Know Who You Are
God says to us in 2 Chronicles 7:14, "If My people..."First, we must know who we are so we can fully understand our level of responsibility. In 1 Peter 2:9, the Holy Spirit lets us know who we are: "You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people, that you should show forth the praises of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." We are:
- A "chosen generation" - select people, God's very own people, bought out of Satan's slavery with the precious Blood of Jesus. We belong to God. We are sons of God. We are accepted and loved of God. We are seated in Heavenly places with Christ our Blood Covenant Brother. We can shout about this.
- A "royal priesthood" - priests with royal status to stand in the presence of God on behalf of others.
- A "holy nation" - a sanctified, set apart nation, within a nation - within the nations of the world. Yes, a nation above all nations- with authority invested in us by Jesus Christ, the King of Kings. We carry the authority above all authority in the Name of Jesus and indeed, we are the Nation with the power to bring change and healing to the nations, in Jesus' Name!
- A "peculiar people" - God's precious treasure - to be displayed by Him to a lost, hurting, and dying world.
All of this is who we are! We are called all this by God who says to us that with this "mantle" upon us and the Godhead within us, the world should see Him displayed in and through us and thereby give Him praise.
Prerequisite #3: Humility
1 Peter 5:5 Amplified) says:
"...clothe (apron) yourselves, all of you, with humility [as the garb of a servant, so that its covering cannot possibly be stripped from you, with freedom from pride arrogance] toward one another, for God sets Himself against the proud (the insolent, the overbearing, the disdainful, the presumptuous, and the boastful)...[and He opposes, frustrates and defeats them], but gives grace (favor, blessing) to the humble." (See also Proverbs 3:34)
Psalm 51 demonstrates a classic example of a man who humbled himself. In verse 17 of Psalm 51, David cried out: "...a broken and contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise." One who humbles himself must, indeed, ever be aware that there is need to change; hence one is forever changing.
We see also in Philippians 2:5-8, that Jesus, the Son of God, humbled Himself to the will of the Father and was obedient even to the death of the cross.
By humbling ourselves, we are now in a position, as God's people, to:
Pray...Seek His face...Turn from our wicked ways...
confidently rejoice in His answer.
Let's join in diligent, fervent prayer for our cities, states and nation.
Love and shalom
(2 Chronicles 7:14)
